How deep are these pieces? Sadly, the software application I have access to makes estimating the depth a little difficult. If, however, the leading three slices represent the ploughsoil, which is most likely about 30cm think, I would think that each slice is about 10cm and we are only getting down about 80cm in total.
Fortunately for us, most of the sites we have an interest in lie just below the plough zone, so it'll do! How does this compare to the other techniques? Magnetometry, as talked about above, is a passive method determining local variations in magnetism against a localised zero worth. Magnetic susceptibility survey is an active technique: it is a procedure of how magnetic a sample of sediment could be in the presence of an electromagnetic field. How much soil is tested depends upon the diameter of the test coil: it can be really small or it can be relatively big.

Top soil will be magnetically improved compared to subsoils just due to natural oxidation and reduction.
By measuring magnetic susceptibility at a reasonably coarse scale, we can detect locations of human profession and middens. Regrettably, we do not have access to a dependable mag sus meter, but Jarrod Burks (who assisted teach at the course in 2013) has some excellent examples. Among which is the Wildcat website in Ohio.
These towns are typically laid out around a central open area or plaza, such as this rebuilt example at Sunwatch, Dayton, Ohio. The magnetic susceptibility survey assisted, however, specify the main location of occupation and midden which surrounded the more open location.
Jarrod Burks' magnetic susceptibility study results from the Wildcat site, Ohio. Red is high, blue is low. The strategy is therefore of fantastic usage in specifying locations of general profession instead of identifying particular features.
